Family Meal Program Guidelines

Families staying at the Ronald McDonald House often experience stress due to the illness or health status of their child. The Family Meal Program offers groups of volunteers the opportunity to extend needed support to these families by preparing a meal at the House. The volunteer group provides all the groceries for the meal. Who can participate? Everyone coming with a group must be a minimum of 13 years of age. Teens may participate in the meal program on a ratio with adults. To sign up to cook a meal, fill out the form at the bottom of this page. Groups arrange for pizzas to be delivered to the House by a restaurant and provide a dessert that requires no cutting or serving, such as cookies or cupcakes.

Due to COVID, there are currently two ways you can help provide meals for families: volunteering on-site to make a meal or donating a catered meal. Choose a location to get started. Families staying at a Ronald McDonald House are often far from the comforts of home, including freshly prepared meals. Through Meals from the Heart, volunteers provide meals for families, allowing them to eat together without the stress of cooking or the expense of dining out.

Please be sure to review the FAQ for all the details, rules, and requirements for participating in Meals from the Heart. Volunteers create their menu, purchase all necessary ingredients, and cook their meal in our fully-equipped kitchens. Donation for Culinary Hearts support the ongoing success of the program and ensure our House can offer families 14 diverse meals each week. Groups receive a link to donate via credit card once a volunteer date is confirmed.

If your group is unable to volunteer on your reserved date, we will make every effort to reschedule your group for a future date. If you need to cancel, no refunds will be issued, but your financial contribution will still support Culinary Hearts and provide meals to families. At our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, donors purchase catered meals from local restaurants to help families who are staying in the hospital.

To ensure the safety of all volunteers, as well as the food safety of the meals being prepared for our families, all Meals from the Heart volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Meals from the Heart groups currently have a maximum group size of five volunteers eight at the RMH near Lurie. If your group includes more than the maximum number of volunteers, we ask that you divide your group and provide meals on different dates or at different locations.
